Design criteria and innovative techniques for seismic improvement: masonry tie beams and partition arches

This article presents two additional techniques aimed at the seismic improvement of historic structures: reinforced masonry tie beams and reinforced partition arches.

The article (divided into three parts) presents several techniques for the seismic improvement of historic buildings, designed and tested in recent years by a research group from the University of Perugia.

The first part summarizes some of the major seismic issues of historic constructions and highlights the Reticolatus technique, developed by a spin-off of the University of Perugia.

In this second part, two additional techniques for the seismic improvement of historic structures are presented: reinforced masonry tie beams and reinforced partition arches.

The third part will discuss experiences related to the reinforcement of wooden beams using pultruded elements.
