ATER complex in Ostia. Pultruded profiles in a maintenance intervention

In the historic ATER neighborhood of Ostia, some maintenance interventions have involved the installation of pultruded profiles in GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) capable of chemically resisting corrosion processes that have led to significant deterioration over the years.

The buildings on Via della Corazzata in Ostia Lido are high-density residential buildings, constructed in the late 1970s by the then IACP (Autonomous Institute for Public Housing of the Province of Rome), which was established in the early 1900s to meet the housing needs of the lower classes. In 2002, with Regional Law Lazio No. 30 of September 3, 2002, ATER (Territorial Company for Residential Building of Rome) was established, which inherited the entire IACP real estate assets. The residential complex consists of a sequence of adjacent buildings forming a continuous architectural facade that extends over seven above-ground floors, with the only variation being the more or less protruding facades compared to a unified base used as individual parking garages for the condominiums.

The ATER complex in Ostia is a historic residential neighborhood in Rome that has often been the subject of media attention in recent years due to the deterioration of its buildings. Like every neighborhood built by IACP, it carries with it the maintenance needs associated with the different variables of these buildings, namely the construction characteristics that each complex possesses based on the introduction of new construction technologies at the time of their construction. The buildings on Via della Corazzata in Ostia Lido, which have a finish of terracotta strips, showed an advanced state of deterioration around the window and French door openings, with evident corrosion damage mainly due to their exposure and the climatic conditions of the area. The planned maintenance activities included the installation of new systems and materials that are not susceptible to corrosion damage.

INTERVENTION

The project involved the installation of pultruded profiles in GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) chemically resistant materials at the window openings. In the first phase of the works (carried out in the spring of 2017), rectangular section tubular profiles were installed, combined with L-section and flat elements, all in GFRP, with mechanical connectors anchored to the masonry. The combination and connection of the three types of profiles allowed for the installation of a system capable of protecting the most vulnerable points from deterioration by interposing a chemically resistant material. The works for the second phase, to be carried out using the same methods as the first, are currently being initiated.
