Seismic Devices

Developed from Fibre Net’s twenty years of experience in seismic upgrading and retrofit, SAFE+ seismic devices have been designed and engineered in compliance with UNI EN 15129, as safety systems for existing precast reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PC) structures.
SAFE+ systems perform a dual function—mechanical connection between structural and non-structural elements and energy dissipation—creating a “dynamic constraint” between elements, improving the structure’s response to seismic actions while maintaining the building’s operational functionality.

System Features

SAFE MODEL A

Combined seismic device with mechanical fuse connection + energy dissipation + damping mechanical restraint, classified as a non-linear device (NLD) according to EN 15129/2009.

It is designed to connect roof beams to columns in precast industrial buildings where connections are lacking. The high mechanical performance of the system allows application to both structural and non-structural elements under significant seismic demand.

The device responds to seismic actions while accommodating movements due to thermal effects acting on the structure; once the maximum displacement is reached, it activates and modifies the structural response.

• For limited displacements, SAFE+ Model A behaves as a mechanical fuse
• Up to 20 mm, it acts as a hysteretic energy dissipator
• Beyond this threshold, to prevent loss of support, it activates a damping mechanical restraint, thanks to an elastic pad that reduces the transfer of seismic forces from beams to columns

SAFE MODEL B

Seismic device with energy dissipation + elastic mechanical restraint function, classified as a non-linear elastic device (NLED) according to EN 15129/2009.

Engineered to connect roof elements to main beams, as well as cladding panels to columns/beams in industrial buildings.

It responds to seismic actions while allowing movements due to thermal effects; beyond these movements, the dissipative function is activated, modifying the structural response.

• Up to 10 mm displacement, it behaves as a hysteretic dissipator
• Between 10 mm and 16.5 mm, it activates the mechanical restraint function

Features and benefits

In interventions aimed at improving the safety of industrial buildings, the adoption of SAFE+ seismic devices represents an effective solution that does not interfere with ongoing production activities, as it:

  • Does not require structural modifications and preserves the original static scheme and stiffness
  • Improves the seismic performance of the structure
  • Is quick and easy to install, with minimal dust and emissions
  • Can be planned in independent areas, without interfering with ongoing activities
  • After an earthquake, unlike other systems, does not require replacement—simple maintenance restores full functionality
  • Reduces maintenance costs
  • Protects the value of assets (plants, machinery, materials)
  • Enhances the value of the property
  • Allows reduction of insurance premiums
  • Reduces the risk of injuries related to structural inadequacy
  • Helps safeguard the health of personnel and ongoing activities
