Reinforced stitching, bonding of orthogonal walls, and connection of masonry wythes

The insertion of bars within masonry through специально drilled holes, subsequently filled with chemical anchors or anchoring mortars, is a strengthening technique that can perform multiple functions: stitching disconnected masonry elements (for example, in the presence of cracks wider than 1 cm), ensuring effective bonding between orthogonal walls to prevent overturning mechanisms and to contribute to the box-like behavior of the masonry structure, and restoring the connection between separated masonry wythes.

The selection of material, diameter, length, and number of bars depends on the characteristics of the masonry and the specific objectives of the intervention.

To guarantee an effective result, it is essential that the masonry has adequate cohesion and compactness; otherwise, the operation should be supplemented with interventions aimed at improving the consistency of the masonry section, such as injection techniques, possibly using the same holes intended for the future connections.

When it is necessary to preserve the exposed appearance of the masonry, it is possible to reinsert a plug into the hole, made from the material extracted during coring, thus making the intervention virtually invisible.
