Diagnosis, design, and execution of seismic improvement intervention with FRP on an industrial warehouse

This technical article, divided into two parts, illustrates the seismic improvement intervention carried out on an industrial warehouse built in 2002 in the Emiliane hills near Porretta Terme (BO) and owned by CAFFITALY SYSTEM SPA, a leading company in coffee pod production.

The prefabricated structure consists of 40 pillars and houses a delicate food production operation covering an area of 9000 square meters, operating continuously 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. As is sadly known, many seismic events have revealed the vulnerability of prefabricated reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures, mostly designed and built with the seismic criteria of the time.

From a business perspective, seismic vulnerability translates primarily into safeguarding the safety of employees, as well as the company’s assets, which include not only the building and production facilities but also concepts such as production downtime and loss of market share.

The focus of this first part is on the design phase of the intervention, aimed at improving the structure by two seismic classes. The second part will cover the execution aspects of the intervention.
