At Palazzo Bastogi in Florence, a building under the direct protection of the Superintendence and housing the Historical Archive, a restoration intervention carried out on the facades included specific consolidation works for the double terrace overlooking the double entrance portal. The advanced degradation of the pietra serena stone led the designers to implement a binding intervention for the stone elements using preformed bars made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite material.
The degradation conditions of the facade were mainly attributed to exposure to atmospheric phenomena, which had caused issues with the plastered surfaces and the pietra serena stone elements. Significant structural damage affected the balustrade of the small balcony, including stone exfoliation and flaking, but most notably related to the degradation of the iron elements.
To improve the connections between the various elements and the supporting structure, the structural issues of the terrace balustrade were resolved by using fiber-reinforced composite materials (preformed CFRP bars from Fibre Net). This approach addressed the conservation requirements and ensured proper reinforcement of the stone structure.
